Ethel Cain is an American singer and songwriter born in 1998. She is known for her Southern Gothic style music. Her recognisable aesthetic is what inspired me to do this project where I imagined a new artistic direction for her latest album “Willoughby Tucker, I’ll always love you”.
I chose a simple but elegant font. I kept the idea on the cross, present on her current logo but I made it more “gothic” style, replacing the “T” in her name. Also, her songs being extremely sentimental, I drew a heart with what looks like pearls, making it look like a rosary, to make a reference to the religious themes she addresses.
There are two poster propositions. On both, we can see Ethel Cain and Willhoughy Tucker hanging out carelessly in a field, except Willhouby is represented like a ghost, a mythical and ethereal figure Ethel made up, to cope with him leaving, like stated in her album. I gave them a dirty, old-styled effect to match her aesthetic.
I decided to make a cover for the vinyl. Just like in the posters, Willhoughby is represented like a ghost to amplify the feeling of loss, really present on this album. Willhoughby haunts Ethel and us too.
Now, why not propose some merchandising for her next tour? I put a lot of attention on the colors of the supports. The logo is present on every piece and on the back of some, there’s the album tracklist.
